Anomalous pulmonary venous drainage.

چکیده
Cases of drainage of the pulmonary veins into the right side of the heart have been well summarized by Brody (1942). He reported 38 cases of complete, and 68 cases of partial, drainage of the pulmonary veins into the right atrium or its tributaries. The purpose of this paper is to record a further case, and to summarize the cases not reported by Brody and those which have been reported during the last 10 years. With the development of thoracic surgery, angiocardiography, and cardiac catheterization during recent years these cases now have some clinical importance apart from their anatomical interest. CASE REPORT The cadaver was that of a muscular man aged 66. The heart was large but within normal limits considering the degree of muscular development. The interatrial septum was closed, and there were no cardiac abnormalities. An upper, larger, and a lower, smaller, pulmonary vein arose from the anterior part of the upper lobe of the right lung. These two veins joined into a very short, broad common trunk which opened into the superior vena cava, inferior and anterior to the opening of the azygos vein (Fig. 1). A large, lower, right pulmonary vein passed into the left atrium, and the drainage of the left lung was normal. The cause of death was not known, but there was no evidence that it was due to any cardiac or respiratory disease.

Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Drainage with Unusual Features.
The occurrence of relatively soft continuous murmurs of the venous hum type in supradiaphragmatic forms of total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage is well recognized (Keith et al., 1954; Keith, Rowe, and Vlad, 1958). Loud continuous murmurs occur at times but are considerably less common (McKusick, 1958). This paper describes two cases of total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage in which lou...
متن کاملTwo cases of total anomalous pulmonary venous return of the supracardiac type with stenosis simulating infradiaphragmatic drainage.
T OTAL anomalous pulmonary venous return has been classified into four types: cardiac, supracardiae, infracardiae, and mixed, depending on the route by which blood is conveyed by the anomalous vein to the riaht side of the heart.' A simplified classification has recently been suggested based on the known physiologic effect of infradiaphragmatic drainage, namely pulmonary venous obstruction.2 O1...
متن کاملSignificance of normal septal motion in total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage.
Paradoxical septal motion is considered to be a characteristic feature of total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, reflecting the right ventricular volume overload in this condition. Patients with additional pulmonary venous obstruction have reduced pulmonary blood flow, and would be expected to show normal septal motion. We have studied the haemodynamic and echocardiographic findings in 21 p...

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine if multidetector-row computed tomography angiography is an effective and non-invasive method for diagnosing anomalous pulmonary venous drainage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 2905 cases from July 2003 to November 2007 in which cardiac multidetector-row computed tomography was used. Of the cases, 393 evaluated congenital cardiopath...
متن کاملIsolated total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage.
Anomalous pulmonary venous connections may provide channels for partial or for complete return of blood from the lungs to the right atrium. These are sometimes the only anomalies, but they also may be part of a complex of abnormalities. The isolated partial anomaly occurs in approximately 0.5 per cent of persons, but among patients with additional cardiovascular anomalies, partial abnormal pulm...
متن کاملTetralogy of Fallot Associated with Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Drainage*
A previously unreported association of tetralogy of Fallot and total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage is described in two infants. The initial clinical manifestation was tetralogy, and both patients had systemic-pulmonary shunt surgery to increase the pulmonary blood flow. Postoperatively, one infant died of massive pulmonary edema, and at postmortem examination total anomalous pulmonary ven...
